OUR HISTORY
In 2017, inside a modest activity center in Ayala Mall - Harbor Point, a quiet revolution in education began. What started as a localized event, the Olongapo City Robotics Cup (OCRC), was built on a bold dream: to expose young students to the world of robotics and spark their imaginations through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. No one could have predicted that this single event would ignite a movement that would eventually reshape how students from Olongapo, and now, across Region III, see their future.

Olongapo City Robotics Cup 2017
A+ Solutions Development Center, who believed that “robotics should not be a privilege but a platform for every child.” Having experienced international robotics competitions with her daughter, she felt compelled to bring that same joy and empowerment to her own city. At the time, the concept of robotics was foreign, even misunderstood. Teachers thought it was a dance program. Resources were scarce. But the passion was unwavering.
With the support of then Mayor Rolen Paulino Sr., who opened the doors of City Hall and the Department of Education to Ms. Viacrusis' proposal, and the dedication of early partner schools and volunteers, OCRC took off. The first edition in 2018 welcomed just 72 student participants, with humble materials and modest recognition. Yet what it lacked in size, it made up for in heart. From Tug-of-War robots to line-tracing challenges, the event showed what was possible when creativity met opportunity.
Each year, the OCRC grew, not only in numbers but in depth. The 2nd OCRC brought in coastal clean-up themed robotics, engaging environmental awareness alongside technical skill. By the 3rd OCRC in 2020, the event made history by welcoming international participants from Romania, and moving to a larger venue at SM Olongapo Central. Even the pandemic couldn’t stop its momentum; though only 39 students participated in 2022, it set the stage for a spectacular comeback.
In 2023, the 5th OCRC saw 142 students, introducing the Future Innovators Category, a game-changing addition where students presented investigatory projects and real-world robotic solutions. Just a year later, in 2024, participation surged by 45.8%, reaching 207 students. And by 2025, the competition hit a milestone. 426 students and 27 future innovation projects representing a nearly 500% increase in five years. From just one elementary participant in the pilot Future Innovators category, 12 teams with 35 students joined by 2025, a mind-blowing 3,400% growth in participation.
ISTREAM'S COMMITMENT
This astonishing rise did not happen by accident. It was powered by the relentless advocacy of i-STREAM Education for Youth Corporation, a non-governmental organization founded in 2022 that now organizes the OCRC. Committed to nurturing youth potential through a curriculum that integrates Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (i-STREAM), the organization promotes education rooted not just in innovation, but in integrity, compassion, and inclusivity.
i-STREAM’s Vision is clear: “To be a venue of opportunities for the younger generation and equip them to be well-rounded leaders anchored in spirituality with high integrity.” Its mission, among others, supports learners below the margin line, ensuring that even the most underserved have access to world-class STEM-R education.
The impact of this vision has become impossible to ignore. OCRC is now a benchmark event for other schools and divisions across the Philippines. Local government units from other provinces visit Olongapo to study its model. The Department of Education has begun integrating robotics into mainstream curricula. What once was a whispered ambition is now a full-throated movement.
And now, that movement is evolving again.
The Birth of Roborithm
Roborithm's Journey
Fuelled by this powerful momentum, i-STREAM Education for Youth Corporation proudly announces the birth of a new chapter, ROBORITHM, a region-wide robotics and innovation platform designed to scale the OCRC legacy across Region III.
The name Roborithm is more than just a fusion of “robotics” and “algorithm,” it is a rhythm, a pulse that beats within every child who dares to dream beyond limitations. It represents the harmony between logic and creativity, between programming and purpose, between regional excellence and global relevance.
Roborithm envisions competitions not just as exhibitions of talent but as training grounds for changemakers, young minds solving real-world problems through code, sensors, gears, and grit. It will build on OCRC’s proven format, task-based coding challenges, innovation boards, and future innovation projects, but will now bring together students, coaches, mentors, and partners from the entire Region III, fostering cross-divisional learning, sharing of best practices, and an ecosystem of shared growth.
This expansion is a call to action. Roborithm will be the spark that lights a thousand fires in the hearts of students across Central Luzon, young people who may never have seen a robot before, but who will soon realize they can build one. More importantly, they will realize they can build a better future.
In the words of Mayor Rolen Paulino Sr., “Lahat ng journey na nagtatapos sa napakalayo ay nagsimula sa single step.” Roborithm is that next step. bold, inclusive, and unstoppable.
From a Local Cup to a Regional Movement
The journey from OCRC to Roborithm is not just a history of competitions. It’s a testament to what can happen when vision meets perseverance, when teachers and leaders say yes to the unknown, and when students are empowered to believe in their capacity to change the world.
From a 10-team event in 2018, to a 52-team regional-scale competition in 2025, the transformation has been nothing short of extraordinary. And yet, this is only the beginning.
Roborithm now stands as the flagship program of Region III in robotics education, a living proof that with the right support, the right people, and the right passion, a simple idea born in Olongapo can ripple out and inspire an entire region.
So we ask: Who’s next?
Who will take up the challenge, build the next robot, and solve the next global problem?
The rhythm is calling.
The future is coding.
The movement is Roborithm.
